Coober Pedy

Often described as a 'frontier town', Coober Pedy is renowned for its fabulous opals and is located in the heart of the South Australian outback. Coober Pedy is the Aboriginal name for ‘hole in the ground’. It has modern facilities and is thoroughly switched on to the needs of tourists. The National Award winning Desert Cave is a prominent feature in Coober Pedy's main street. Coober Pedy is situated on the edge of the Stuart Range on beds of sand and siltstone 100 feet thick topped with a stony desert that is nearly treeless. In Coober Pedy, experience the rare event of staying in an underground hotel. Famous around the world for this unusual characteristic, Coober Pedy is almost an underground town. Take a guided town tour to see underground churches, homes and shops, the underground art gallery, bookshop and pottery, the Umoona Mine Museum, opal cutting demonstrations and the Opal Cave lookout. Many of the locals (about 50%) prefer to live underground in dugouts where it is cool in summer and warm in winter; several dugouts and mines are open for inspection. This is a town that embodies the true spirit of the Aussie outback – rugged and desolate, but spectacular at the same time, the landscape of Coober Pedy is unmatched. Coober Pedy is also famous for its opal mines. As the largest producer of opal in the world, opal can be bought from more than 30 shops in Coober Pedy and, if you're really keen, you can even dig for your own. About 30 minutes drive from Coober Pedy is the mystical landscape of the Breakaways Reserve and Moon Plain. See these just before sunset when the colours are astonishing. Useful Links
