		REX posted a strong 1H result with underlying PBT of A$18.1m ahead of our expected A$16.4m. This was driven by improved pricing in RPT operations and the strong performance of Pel-Air as it benefited from contract commencements in the period. While the outlook is positive for Pel-Air, REX's RPT operations are under some pressure due to the impact of the carbon tax, slowing passenger demand and possibly impending industrial action by REX's pilots. 		REX has a number of growth initiatives that are coming to fruition in FY12, including the restructure of Pel-Air, which continues to build its business in medivac, defence and fly-in fly-out contracts. In addition, REX’s Australian Airline Pilot Academy (AAPA), has recently announced an international accreditation that will see the training of international pilots for the first time. We believe that these growth initiatives could result in these divisions representing 30-40% of group revenue significantly diversifying away from the passenger business. We continue to rate REX a BUY given its discount to our blended valuation of $1.57 per share, the strong EPS growth forecast for FY12 and FY13 and potential upside from new contract wins. download pdf (336 Kb)

But Rex has a resilient core airline business holding monopoly position on most routes, many too small to be profitably served by Qantas, Virgin Blue or Jetstar. Expectations for solid growth in the charter business and pilot academy add to the appeal. Free float is small and share turnover low.
