King Island

Less than an hour from Melbourne lies a natural island of coastal beauty, shipwreck history and fine food.

King Island in Bass Strait is just 60 km long and 25 km wide but there is plenty to see along the windswept coastline, drive through the productive farmland and explore the main town of Currie, the former mining town of Grassy, and the seaside settlement of Naracoopa. It has a population of 2000 people who are all kept busy producing world famous succulent beef, gold medal winning cheese, milk, crayfish and abalone, as well as its unique kelp farming industry.
Any time spent on a King Island holiday is very relaxing – the pace is slow and the locals are friendly. Enjoy the remains of the Calcified Forest, visit the historical museum, the observatory, the wind farm, or go and taste the delicious cheese at the King Island Dairy Fromagerie. Take time to watch free roaming wildlife including land and sea birds, wallabies, turkeys, peafowl, and pheasants. Slow down and take in the island atmosphere.

King Island is well known for its produce including seafood, beef, pepper, cheese, water, herbal teas, honey and bakery products. Sample succulent rock lobster, local Sea Elephant oysters, grown in the pristine waters of King Island's Sea Elephant River, giant King crabs and fresh local scale fish. The KING ISLAND DAIRY is famous for being a maker of some of the world's finest produce and the KING ISLAND BAKERY is famous for its award winning range of delicious pies.

Apart from tempting the tastebuds, King Island also attracts tourists with its peaceful environment, natural beauty and “clean green” image, country style race meetings, and general friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

This is an island of fine foods and friendly people!

Important Biosecurity Requirements when travelling to King Island

King Island, like the State of Tasmania it is apart of, has a natural advantage as an island and is relatively free of many pests, weeds and diseases that are present on mainland Australia, and the rest of the world.

You can help protect this beautiful island by ensuring you don’t bring any unwanted pest guests with you when you come to visit and stay. Please remember not to bring any fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, animal products, plant material, soil and seeds. King Island has some of the best produce in the world – so there’s no need to bring anything!

Please also check that your golfing gear, camping equipment, fishing gear and other equipment have been cleaned and dried and are free from soil, weed seeds and other potential pests or diseases. It only takes a weed seed or other introduced pest or disease to spoil the magic of this near pristine part of the world. It is a beautiful place - so let’s keep it that way! Your help is appreciated.
