Burnie

The City of Burnie is at a key junction on Tasmania’s touring circuit, being only an hour’s drive from Cradle Mountain and the historic village of Stanley, and less than two hours from the wild West Coast. Burnie enjoys a temperate climate, generous rainfall, clean sea breezes and fantastic soil, which result in outstanding vegetables, beef, poultry and seafood. Some of the world’s best specialty cheeses are available right at the factory door at the Lactos Cheese Centre where you can sample true Tasmanian flavours – from club-style Mersey Valley to a Cradle Mountain White Diamond Brie. Take advantage of the local prices and vast array of Tasmanian speciality produce from pickles and native peppercorns to the best Tasmanian wines. The talent of Burnie artists can be seen at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery or at the Creative Paper Mill where you can try your hand at the age-old technique of hand-made papermaking. Evenings are great for wildlife experiences including the Fern Glade Platypus Trail and the Little Penguin Observation Centre only minutes from the city. Waterfalls and walking tracks, gardens and fantastic views are all available either right in Burnie or not far out of town. Burnie was the heartland of early white settlement in North-West Tasmania and features well-preserved heritage displays at the Pioneer Village Museum and the Burnie Railway Station, as well as number of significant historical buildings throughout the city. Burnie's central business and shopping district provides a thoroughfare to the beachside boardwalk and to a 17-kilometre walking trail that skirts the city. Explore the beautiful pathways of Burnie Park through native rainforest and dramatic waterfalls.
