St George
Situated on the western side of Queensland’s cotton country, along the beautiful Ballonne River is the town of St George. St George visitors will have an incomparable day fishing on the Ballonne River with cod fish up to 100 pounds. St George also boasts one of the greatest populations of birds in Australia. The historic museum, the illuminated emu eggs and the Aboriginal rock pools are other must do activities in St George. Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters is one of St George's most famous sons. He became the only known Aboriginal fighter pilot to serve in WWII showing his true St George spirit and is remembered on a pilots' memorial opposite the St George Visitor Information Centre. The name St George is said to have come from several stories, one of which is the Golden Legend. The legend tells the story of a dragon who lived in a lake in Libya. Whole armies had fought against the dragon but were defeated. The monster consumed two sheep each day but when sheep were limited, lots were drawn and maidens were substituted for sheep until Saint George came to town. Hearing the story on a day when a princess was to be eaten, he rode to town to battle the dragon and killed it with a single blow. He was then given a large reward by the king, but Saint George distributed it to the poor and rode away. The story of St George signifies the bravery and kindness of people in the Outback with the dragon representing droughts, floods and isolation.
Routes to St George are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
