Bedourie

Situated in Channel Country on Lake Eyre is Bedourie, a small town which acts as the administrative centre of the Diamantina Shire. During the 1880s, Bedourie operated as a watering and rest stop for drovers moving cattle to Birdsville, a town 200 kilometres south. Now the town’s largest industry is still the cattle industry and operates as one of the best cattle fattening areas in Queensland. The town has excellent facilities for travellers including motels, a hotel with meals, cabins, caravan parks, restaurants and a tavern, a general store and one of the favourites, a therapeutic spa with the warm, clear water directly from an artesian bore. Bedourie is known for the invention of the uniquely Australian Bedourie Camp Oven. Due to problems with outback cookware, the Bedourie camp oven was constructed for the drovers and cameleers of the camel trains. They were manufactured out of spun steel with a tight fitting lid to avoid cracking due to the harsh conditions of the outback. Other major attractions include the historic Mud Hut, the cemetery and the artistic representation of a dust storm that stands in Herbert Street. Nearby must dos are the Vaughan Johnson Lookout, the renowned wetland of Cuttaburra Crossing, Carcoory Ruins and one of Australia's top ten National Parks, the Diamantina National Park.
Routes to Bedourie are operated in conjunction with Queensland Government.
