Bathurst

Bathurst is Australia’s oldest inland town, proclaimed by Governor Lachlan Macquarie on 7 May 1815. It has much to offer the visitor all year round. Bathurst has been part of some crucial events in Australian history and there are many museums and historical buildings there that tell the stories. Ben Chifley, one of our best-loved Prime Ministers (1945-49) was born and raised in Bathurst and his home is open to the public, kept just as it was when he lived there. Miss Traill’s House, owned by the National Trust, is another fascinating experience, and the Old Government Cottage, built in 1817 is the oldest building in the city. The Courthouse, built in 1880 is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in NSW and presents an imposing sight across the park from the city centre. Bathurst has much to offer the visitor with a number of diverse and interesting activities on offer; from fossicking for gold and wandering through historical buildings, to browsing through shops and galleries, and sampling the local food and wine. You can also enjoy a leisurely walk through the park, or pick up the pace with a lap of the famous Mount Panorama. One of the town's icons, Mount Panorama, has been a centre for motor racing since early last century. In 2004, the Australian Museum of Fossils and Minerals will open in the centre of the city and will house a rare complete skeleton of Tyrannosaurus Rex. The city is also renowned for its educational facilities, which include Charles Sturt University, the Western Institute of TAFE, secondary and 19 primary schools.
