The upward trend in fuel price has forced Australia’s largest independent regional airline, Regional Express (Rex) to increase its fuel surcharge by $3.00 (including GST). Effective for all sales from 1 November 2007, Rex’s fuel surcharge will increase from $24.00 to $27.00 per sector.
Rex General Manager of Network Strategy and Sales, Warrick Lodge said that Rex’s last fuel surcharge adjustment was in January 2007 when it was reduced from $27.00 back to $24.00. Then the barrel price was USD 77.00.
“With the barrel currently at USD 90.00, Rex is obliged to increase the surcharge again”, Mr Lodge said.
“In spite of the fuel surcharge, Rex is proud of the fact that its average ticket price, inclusive of the fuel surcharge, is about 15% below what it was five years ago when the surcharge did not exist. Excluding the fuel surcharge, Rex’s average ticket price today is more than 30 percent below what it was five years ago”, Mr Lodge said.
The fuel surcharge increase is also applicable to Rex’s subsidiary airline, Air Link.
Rex is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 34 Saab 340 aircraft on 1,300 flights weekly to 25 destinations from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.
